Cables for projects in the Middle East and Africa: what the tenders require

A tender for an electricity company in Iraq, Egypt or Kenya does not look like a European order. Asks for the same thing in essence, but in another order and with other emphases: the norm first, the terms of service after, and export documents before talking about price. These are the demands that we see repeated, and how it covers them ZMS Cable MENA.

1. The norm, and not just your number

The basis is IEC: 60502-1 Y 60502-2 for power cables up to 30 kV, 60840 above, 61089 for bare conductors, 60227 Y 60245 for installation and rubber cables. Many electricity companies in the region inherited British specifications, so BS 5467 y BS 6724 appear frequently, and there are contracts that mention GB/T. What matters is that the manufacturer delivers the construction that the cited standard describes., not an equivalent. In each product page from the MENA site the standard appears next to the construction, for the buyer to compare with your specifications before requesting the offer.

2. Temperature and sun

A cable buried 25 °C of soil in Europe works at 35 o 40 °C in the Gulf, and outdoors it receives radiation that ages the PVC in a few years. That's why the XLPE, con 90 °C of conductor in service and 250 °C short circuit, is the default option for power, as in the XLPE cable 0,6/1 kV or the medium voltage series of 12/20 kV Y 18/30 kV. For airlines, conductor temperature limits line capacity; That's where the high temperature conductors come in., explained in the guide how to choose an HTLS driver.

3. Arena, rodents and armor

Direct laying in sandy soil and the presence of rodents make steel wire reinforcement (SWA) be almost mandatory in buried distribution, and that a polyethylene cover be requested instead of PVC in aggressive soils. In rural networks in Africa, they are also used ABC stranded overhead cables, that avoid the ditch completely.

4. Fire behavior

public buildings, Hospitals and subways in the region specify LSZH covers and IEC tests 60332 Y 61034. When LSZH is appropriate and when PVC is sufficient is explained in the guide PVC or LSZH: the difference that is only seen on the day of the fire.

5. Documents, no promises

Certificate of origin, packing list, commercial invoice, batch testing report and third party inspection before shipment. Each batch of ZMS is tested in an ISO/IEC accredited laboratory 17025 and travels with his report; factory certificates are published in the certificates page from the MENA site.
