Promotion of Innovative Energy Storage Projects
The spanish government, through the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has allocated an investment of 160 million euros to finance energy storage projects. The goal is to connect 600 MW of storage capacity to the national electrical grid for the year 2026.
This investment will be made through a competitive bidding process, in which energy storage projects will be selected, either independently or in combination with renewable energy generation facilities.
As in the usual Spanish tenders, There are additional budgets for the Canary Islands regions (15 millions of euros) and Balearic Islands (4 millions of euros).
The initiative will cover various energy storage technologies, including pumped hydraulic storage (PHES) and thermal storage.
Depending on the size of the request, The financing will cover between 40% and the 65% of the cost of the projects. This investment is expected to boost the economic viability of these projects., encourage the integration of renewable energy online and generate employment and business opportunities locally.
MITECO plans to select the projects at the end of 2023, and the deadline for its implementation is established as 30 June 2026.
